Summary
- Turmeric compound may match omeprazole for indigestion.
- Study found turmeric effective in treating stomach issues.
- No serious side effects reported in the trial.

A study published in BMJ Evidence-Based Medicine indicates that turmeric, commonly used for its yellow hue in curries, shows promise in treating indigestion. Researchers found that a compound within turmeric, curcumin, may be as effective as the conventional drug omeprazole in alleviating symptoms of functional dyspepsia.
This research involved 206 patients aged 18 to 70 who experienced recurrent upset stomachs. Over a 28-day period, participants were assigned to receive either turmeric, omeprazole, or a combination of both. Significant reductions in symptom severity were observed across all groups by day 28, with further improvements noted by day 56.
While the study noted that turmeric users' satisfaction scores did not change significantly, potentially due to taste or smell, no serious adverse effects were reported. However, some overweight participants using curcumin showed slight deterioration in liver function tests. Despite the study's limitations, including its size and short duration, researchers believe these findings warrant further investigation and could justify considering curcumin in clinical practice for indigestion.
