Rare 'Mermaid Birth' Girl Dies; Parents Cite Hospital Delays
6 Oct
Summary
- A one-year-old girl with a rare condition died after hospital staff showed little urgency.
- Parents claim cannulation difficulties and cardiac issues were not handled with due care.
- The child was born with an en caul, or 'mermaid', birth and a heart defect.

A one-year-old girl, Trixie Morvoren, known affectionately as Trixie Mo, tragically passed away at Royal Cornwall Hospital. Trixie Mo, who had a rare 'mermaid birth' and a congenital heart defect, was admitted after becoming unwell at home.
Her parents, Ashleigh and James Cooke, expressed concerns that hospital staff did not demonstrate sufficient urgency during her treatment. They noted difficulties in administering intravenous treatment due to challenges in inserting a cannula, suggesting ultrasound-guided methods should have been employed sooner given Trixie Mo's medical history.
Trixie Mo, born with Down syndrome, had a complex heart condition requiring surgery in Bristol when she was six months old. Despite initial complications, she had been thriving. Her parents reported feeling that staff seemed too casual when they brought her to the hospital, questioning the lack of supplementary oxygen and the delay in involving a specialist cardiologist.
The inquest heard from consultant paediatricians who described Trixie Mo's death as an extremely rare scenario, stating that resuscitation processes were followed. However, they acknowledged that difficulty in cannulation hindered the diagnostic process. Improvements in communication with parents regarding treatment are being considered.
