Oxygen Flowmeter Mishap Injures Hospital Attender

A hospital attender in Thiruvananthapuram sustained a head injury on Friday after an oxygen flowmeter's plastic cover detached and hit her. The incident occurred in the casualty wing of the government medical college. The injured employee, identified as Shereefa Beevi, was immediately transferred to the trauma ICU for observation.

Medical college superintendent Dr C G Jayachandran stated the injury was mild and not serious, with the patient receiving treatment. Oxygen flowmeters are crucial for regulating medical gas flow to patients. While many systems are centrally regulated, on-site regulation is sometimes necessary.

This event is the most recent in a pattern of similar accidents reported at government hospitals in the capital city. In May 2025, a trainee anaesthesia technician suffered a head injury and minor skull fracture due to a flowmeter incident. Earlier, in March of the same year, a nursing assistant at SAT Hospital sustained a serious eye injury when a flowmeter burst.
