Parasite Poses Silent Threat: Toxoplasmosis Neglected

Toxoplasmosis, caused by the Toxoplasma gondii parasite, impacts an estimated one-third of the world's population. While often asymptomatic in healthy individuals, it is recognized as the primary cause of infections within the eye, leading to potential vision loss. Researchers are calling for its classification as a neglected tropical disease (NTD) by the World Health Organization (WHO).

This classification is sought because toxoplasmosis meets NTD criteria: it concentrates in impoverished areas, is prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions, is preventable and controllable, and currently lacks sufficient research and policy attention. The parasite is contracted through contact with cat feces or consumption of undercooked meat, and can be transmitted from mother to fetus, potentially causing miscarriages.

Recognition as an NTD would facilitate increased funding for crucial public health measures, including improved food safety, access to clean water and sanitation, and enhanced antenatal care. It would also support the development of screening, diagnosis, and treatment protocols for congenital and ocular toxoplasmosis, alongside vital medical advances and rehabilitation services.
