Toxic Water Crisis Grips Delhi-NCR: Deadly Diseases on the Rise
4 Nov
Summary
- Over 25% of Delhi's groundwater exceeds safe salinity levels
- Faecal contamination found in 115 out of 176 rainwater harvesting pits in Dwarka
- Spike in killer bacterial infections, cholera, and long-term skin damage due to water pollution
As of November 4th, 2025, Delhi-NCR is facing a severe public health crisis due to widespread water pollution and contamination. Recent reports reveal that over 25% of groundwater samples in Delhi exceed safe salinity levels, while several areas show alarming levels of faecal bacterial contamination in the water supply.
This toxic water crisis has led to a spike in various waterborne diseases. Killer bacterial infections, caused by E. coli and other toxin-producing strains, are on the rise due to untreated sewage infiltrating the water pipes. Cholera, a life-threatening diarrheal illness, has also seen a surge, with 240 recorded cases in Delhi alone this year. Additionally, long-term skin and health damage from heavy metal contamination in the water is becoming a growing concern.
The overburdened healthcare infrastructure in the region is struggling to cope with the increasing caseload of water-related illnesses. Experts warn that Delhi-NCR could be heading towards a major public health crisis if urgent interventions are not implemented to address the root causes of water pollution and ensure safe, clean water for the residents.
