Wigs, Extensions Contain Harmful Chemicals
13 Feb
Summary
- Hair extensions and wigs contain harmful chemicals like flame retardants.
- Some chemicals found are linked to cancer and reproductive issues.
- Black women are disproportionately affected by toxic hair products.

A new study reveals that many hair extension products contain harmful chemicals, with 41 out of 43 tested items found to have hazardous substances. These identified compounds include flame retardants, pesticides, and plastic stabilizers, some of which are known carcinogens and linked to reproductive issues. Concerns are heightened as these products are frequently used by Black women.
Researchers highlighted that 17 chemicals linked to breast cancer were found in numerous samples. Additionally, some products contained organotin compounds, typically used as stabilizers in plastics, which are associated with cancer and hormone disruption. The study emphasizes the need for greater transparency from manufacturers regarding product ingredients.
Experts note that harsh chemicals can be absorbed through the scalp or inhaled, posing risks to both consumers and stylists. While more research is needed to understand long-term impacts, legislative efforts are underway to increase FDA regulation of cosmetics and ensure safer beauty products for all communities, especially those most affected.
Consumers seeking safer options are advised to look for products labeled 'nontoxic' or 'toxic-free.' Some suggest at-home remedies like apple cider vinegar rinses to reduce chemical presence, though their effectiveness is limited. Advocacy for consumer safety and demand for regulated products remain crucial in addressing these health concerns.
