Cat Food Tainted: Toxins Found in Nearly All Tested Products
2 Oct
Summary
- Nearly all tested cat foods contain toxic plastic, glyphosate, and heavy metals.
- Lead found in 99% of samples, cadmium in 96%, arsenic in 94%.
- Contaminants pose ongoing health risks, potentially accumulating in cats.

An extensive investigation has uncovered widespread contamination in cat food, with nearly all tested products containing toxic plastic chemicals, the herbicide glyphosate, and heavy metals such as lead, mercury, and arsenic. These contaminants were detected in all forms of cat food, including wet, dry, and air- or freeze-dried varieties, irrespective of their labeling as natural or nutritionally superior.
The analysis found lead in 99% of samples, cadmium in 96%, and arsenic in 94% of the tested products, spanning 62 different brands. These substances can accumulate in cats' bodies, posing significant health risks, particularly concerning for conditions like chronic kidney disease, a leading cause of death in older felines.
Experts noted that dry cat food generally contained higher levels of lead compared to wet or air-dried options. Furthermore, fish and seafood-based foods showed a stronger association with mercury and cadmium contamination due to bioaccumulation in aquatic animals.
Glyphosate was detected in 37% of products, particularly those with a higher proportion of plant ingredients. Phthalates, plastic chemicals linked to health concerns, were found in about half of the tested products, with higher concentrations in canned and pouch varieties, potentially originating from processing equipment.
While pet food manufacturers assert they have robust safety and quality assurance programs, the findings highlight potential gaps. Consumers are advised to vary their cat's diet, especially if it includes seafood, and to scrutinize ingredient lists, as the primary ingredient is not always a reliable indicator of contaminant levels.
