Toxic Balloons Hit Online Shoppers
9 Dec
Summary
- Online balloons contain toxic, cancer-causing chemicals.
- One unbranded packet exceeded legal limits sixfold.
- Children are at risk when blowing or playing with balloons.

Investigations have revealed that balloons bought from online marketplaces contain dangerous cancer-causing chemicals. These nitrosamines, produced during industrial manufacturing, were found in excessive levels in several balloon packs. One unbranded set from AliExpress contained six times the legal limit, while others from eBay and The Range exceeded it fourfold.
Experts express deep concern for children, who are at risk when putting balloons in their mouths, either for inflation or during play. Consumers have reported strong chemical smells and symptoms like dizzy spells and numb lips. Sue Davies of Which? described exposing children to high carcinogen concentrations as 'outrageous.'
Several online marketplaces have removed affected listings and are investigating. Consumer protection advocates urge the government to enforce stricter regulations on online platforms to prevent hazardous products from reaching consumers, emphasizing the need for immediate action.
