Toothpaste Sabotages Dental Health, Warns Dentist

Summary
- Toothpaste can destroy beneficial bacteria essential for dental health.
- Natural toothpastes with essential oils may cause more harm than good.
- Broad-spectrum antimicrobials in toothpaste kill protective mouth bacteria.

A San Francisco-based dentist with four decades of experience has issued a critical warning regarding common toothpaste ingredients. He states that typical toothpaste use, including many natural varieties, may actively worsen dental health by destroying beneficial oral bacteria. These helpful microbes compete with cavity-causing pathogens and support the conditions necessary for remineralization.
Many toothpastes, particularly those labeled as 'natural,' often contain essential oils like tea tree, clove, cinnamon, and oregano. While intended to combat bacteria, these act as broad-spectrum antimicrobials. The dentist explains that these substances cannot differentiate between harmful and beneficial bacteria, effectively 'nuking' the entire oral ecosystem with each use.
