Too Much Protein Ages You Faster
1 Aug
Summary
- Excess protein without exercise may cause DNA damage and accelerate aging.
- Low-protein diets show potential for longer lifespans and better fat burning.
- Branched-chain amino acids may increase inflammation and insulin resistance.

Emerging scientific findings challenge the widespread belief that higher protein intake is universally beneficial, particularly for those in midlife and beyond. Research indicates that for many, excessive protein consumption, especially without regular exercise, may accelerate aging and increase the risk of serious health issues. Studies by Professor Dudley Lamming from the University of Wisconsin-Madison have linked high-protein diets without exercise to insulin resistance and increased body fat accumulation, even at consistent calorie levels. Furthermore, evidence suggests that overconsumption of protein can lead to greater DNA damage due to the byproducts of digestion. A Danish study comparing different protein intake levels found that individuals consuming less than 10% of their calories from protein had a lower incidence of type 2 diabetes and premature death. The type of protein also matters, with high levels of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) found in red meat and certain powders being associated with inflammation and metabolic problems. Experts suggest that for less active individuals, aiming for around 15g of protein per meal and balancing plant-based with animal-based protein sources may be more beneficial for long-term health and potentially increase lifespan.
