A 20-month-old boy from West Bengal experienced persistent urinary tract infections for nearly six months. Initial treatments failed to resolve the issue, leading to further investigations that revealed two stones in his right kidney, one measuring 1.2 cm. The family sought specialized care in Bengaluru.
During evaluation, the larger stone moved to the pelvi-ureteric junction, obstructing urine flow and causing severe pain and fever. A medical team performed emergency DJ stenting to drain infected urine, followed by a minimally invasive Mini Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (Mini PCNL) procedure.
Using advanced laser technology through a small puncture, surgeons fragmented and removed the stones. This approach avoided traditional open surgery, minimizing scarring and recovery time. The removed stone was identified as a rare cystine stone, suggesting a possible underlying genetic disorder.
The child recovered swiftly, resuming feeding within 24 hours and being discharged soon after. Doctors emphasized the success of the minimally invasive technique in preserving the infant's renal health and ensuring a rapid, positive outcome.
