Toddler's Brain Cancer Misdiagnosed as Tonsillitis
25 Apr
Summary
- A toddler was diagnosed with a grade 3 ependymoma brain tumor.
- Her symptoms were initially dismissed as tonsillitis by doctors.
- The family is now raising awareness and fundraising for research.

A young girl from Leicestershire, England, was diagnosed with a highly aggressive grade 3 ependymoma brain tumor at just 12 months old. Her parents noted persistent vomiting and tremors, but initial medical advice suggested tonsillitis, leading to delayed diagnosis. Frustrated by not being heard, her mother insisted on further evaluation.
Doctors discovered a large tumor on her left frontal lobe, with initial assessments suggesting surgery might be impossible. However, after transfer to another hospital, specialists deemed the tumor operable. Nancy underwent two surgeries, successfully removing 95% of the growth.
Nancy commenced chemotherapy in December 2023, a challenging period that included pain management and ovary removal. By January 2025, she completed her treatment and was declared cancer-free. The Dakin family now actively shares their experience to educate others about childhood brain cancer symptoms.
Looking ahead, the family is participating in the '200k in May Your Way' challenge in May 2026 to support Brain Tumour Research. They aim to raise funds and contribute to future breakthroughs in childhood cancer research.
