Tiruchi Corporation is intensifying its administration of anti-rabies vaccines to stray dogs by deploying additional dog-catching teams. This accelerated campaign is currently underway, with officials planning to introduce more teams soon to expedite the process.
The Animal Birth Control (ABC) program has also been enhanced. Daily, approximately 40 stray dogs are caught for sterilization. Furthermore, about 170 to 200 stray dogs that have already been sterilized and marked are identified daily to receive booster doses of the anti-rabies vaccine.
Following vaccination, dogs are released back to their original capture locations. The City Health Officer anticipates vaccinating about 3,000 stray dogs monthly. The estimated stray dog population within Tiruchi city limits is 43,767, according to a 2025 survey.
To date, 34,561 stray dogs have been sterilized and vaccinated against rabies under the Corporation's ABC program. Since January 2026, 7,910 stray dogs have received anti-rabies vaccinations. Booster doses are crucial, administered every two years for sustained protection.
The Corporation organized this special campaign to identify and provide booster vaccinations to previously sterilized dogs. In 2025, around 5,000 stray dogs received booster doses. District Collector and Corporation Commissioner recently reviewed the vaccination drive, instructing officials on safe capture and vaccination protocols.
