- Successful procedure highlights advanced cardiac care availability in Tiruchi.

Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital in Tiruchi has achieved a significant milestone by successfully conducting its inaugural open-heart surgery. The procedure addressed a congenital heart condition, specifically an atrial septal defect, in a 47-year-old patient who had experienced recurrent fainting episodes for nine years. The patient's admission on November 15 was prompted by progressive breathlessness, leading to a comprehensive assessment for surgical suitability.
On November 20, the patient underwent a successful atrial septal defect closure under general anesthesia, utilizing a Heart-Lung Machine for support. A specialized pericardial patch was employed to repair the defect in the heart's upper chambers. This complex operation was a collaborative effort by a Cardio-Vascular and Thoracic Surgery team, supported by cardiologists, anesthesiologists, general surgeons, and nursing staff.
