Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital in Tiruchi has initiated a monthly scheme to bolster the nutrition of 20 cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. This program, a collaboration with the Indian Medical Association (IMA) Tiruchi chapter and Tiruchi Oncology Society, commenced this week.
The initiative addresses the critical need for protein-rich food, essential for patients undergoing chemotherapy, providing dietary support they might otherwise lack. Each monthly nutrition hamper, valued at ₹1,200, contains items such as pulses, lentils, and sunflower oil. Patients will be shortlisted monthly in agreement with hospital authorities, with priority given to those from economically weaker sections.
The hospital also recently inaugurated its cancer outpatient department in January, alongside dedicated chemotherapy and palliative care wards. Approximately 300 visitors are seen monthly at the OPD. Upcoming facilities, such as a PET scan, are expected to further enhance oncology services.
