Tiny Fighter: 600gm Baby Goes Home Strong from KEM Hospital
5 Apr
Summary
- A 600gm baby girl, born prematurely, successfully went home after months of care.
- The infant required extensive NICU treatment, including ventilator support for four months.
- KEM Hospital, a public facility, provided free critical care for the underweight infant.

A severely underweight baby girl, weighing only 600 grams at birth, has successfully been discharged from KEM Hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The infant, born prematurely in her 25th week of pregnancy late last year, spent more than four months receiving critical care.
During her extended stay, the baby required significant medical interventions. She relied on ventilator support for four months due to respiratory distress and underwent surgery for spontaneous intestinal perforations. The infant also battled sepsis, making her recovery a testament to the hospital's expertise.
This milestone is particularly significant for a public hospital, as such intensive NICU treatments often cost a substantial amount in private facilities. The child was treated entirely free of charge, underscoring KEM Hospital's commitment to accessible healthcare. She has now reached a healthy 3.5kg and is thriving on breast milk, with all medical scans appearing normal.
KEM Hospital is also expanding its NICU capacity, with an additional 20-bed unit set to open soon. This new facility, located adjacent to the labour ward, aims to streamline the transfer of premature infants to specialized care.
