TikTok Fuels Illegal Vaping for Teens
2 Jun
Summary
- TikTok videos promote illicit vaping, fostering a teen subculture.
- 76% of videos highlight ease of discreet underage vape purchases.
- Sellers glamorize vapes with bundle deals to evade age verification.
TikTok videos are inadvertently fostering a culture that promotes illicit vaping among young people, according to a new study published on May 31 in the journal Addiction. Researchers analyzed dozens of videos using eight specific hashtags related to illegal vaping. The findings indicated that approximately 57% of these videos demonstrated an indifference towards laws that restrict vaping for minors.
A striking 76% of the analyzed content emphasized themes of concealment and accessibility, detailing how easily underage individuals can acquire and use vapes discreetly. Some videos even advertised 'puff bundles' combining vapes with cosmetics or snacks, a tactic designed to circumvent age verification measures. Researchers noted that this informal content on platforms like TikTok may be more appealing to youth than formal health messaging.
