Tick Bites Spike: ER Visits Soar Nationwide
29 Apr
Summary
- Nearly 100 national ER visits for tick bites in April.
- 30% of Minnesota black-legged ticks carry Lyme disease.
- Experts advise prompt tick removal and preventative measures.

As of April 2026, emergency rooms across the nation have seen nearly 100 visits for tick bites, marking the highest figure for April since 2017. Vector Ecologist Jordan Mandli notes that this surge is likely a combination of factors, including heightened tick activity and increased public awareness of tickborne illnesses. Ticks can appear as early as January, though the first deer tick of the season was spotted on March 9. While tick numbers are currently average in Minnesota, surveys indicate that approximately 30% of black-legged ticks in the region carry the bacteria responsible for Lyme disease. Health officials advise immediate removal of ticks followed by washing the bite area with soap. To prevent bites, wearing long sleeves and pants, using tick repellents, and checking thoroughly for ticks after being in grassy areas are crucial steps. This includes checking oneself, children, and pets.
