Busy Mum's Cancer Missed by Doctors for Months
23 Mar
Summary
- Symptoms were repeatedly dismissed as a virus or busy mum stress.
- Private scans revealed suspicious thyroid nodules and enlarged lymph nodes.
- Diagnosis of thyroid cancer came after months of ignored symptoms.

Kerri Laird, a 35-year-old mother of two near Rochdale, Greater Manchester, experienced severe symptoms including extreme tiredness, hair loss, and lumps on her neck starting in June 2025. Despite consulting her GP six times in June and July 2025, her concerns were dismissed as a virus or attributed to her role as a busy mother.
Frustrated, Kerri paid for a private ultrasound in late July 2025, which identified multiple thyroid nodules and suspicious lymph nodes. Although an NHS biopsy of her lymph nodes later came back clear, her pain persisted. She visited her GP another twelve times over the subsequent months.
A second private ultrasound in December 2025 showed that her thyroid nodules and lymph nodes had grown. This led to a referral to an ENT specialist who, initially skeptical, eventually agreed to a biopsy of her thyroid. On February 16, 2026, Kerri received her thyroid cancer diagnosis.
Having since had her thyroid removed, Kerri expressed relief at finally having answers. She advocates for others to trust their instincts and advocate for their health, believing her private scans potentially saved her life by enabling an earlier diagnosis.
