Summary
- A falling suitcase revealed a terminal brain tumor in a 29-year-old woman.
- Initial symptoms were mistaken for ADHD before diagnosis.
- She had 80% of the tumor removed and now advocates for research.

Lauren Macpherson, a 29-year-old cardiac physiologist from Cardiff, had her life irrevocably changed when a heavy suitcase fell on her head during a train journey. This unexpected incident led to scans that revealed a terminal brain tumor, a diagnosis that came as a stark contrast to her belief that her symptoms were related to ADHD.
Initially, doctors gave Lauren a prognosis of as little as 12 months to live. However, a biopsy identified the tumor as oligodendroglioma, a rare type with an average life expectancy of 10 to 12 years. In October 2025, she underwent a six-hour awake craniotomy, successfully removing 80% of the tumor.
Despite initial struggles with memory loss and speech following the surgery, Lauren is now focused on living her remaining time meaningfully. She is planning her wedding and a trip to Italy for her 30th birthday. While the tumor is currently incurable, she remains hopeful, inspired by advancements in new drug treatments and a positive outlook for the future, while also raising funds for Brain Tumour Research.
