Telangana Doctors Face Termination Over Unexplained Absences
24 Feb
Summary
- 115 doctors in Telangana received show cause notices for long unauthorised absences.
- Only 21 doctors have responded, with 20 rejoining duty and one finishing studies.
- Some doctors have been absent since 2013, with six never joining after appointment.

In Telangana, a significant disciplinary action has been initiated against 115 doctors serving in government medical colleges and hospitals. These medical professionals have been issued show cause notices by the Director of Medical Education (DME) due to extended periods of unauthorised absence from their duties.
This move affects doctors across various specialities, including Obstetrics and Gynaecology, General Medicine, and Surgery. They were posted in numerous medical institutions across the state, such as Osmania Medical College and Gandhi Medical College.
To date, only 21 doctors have responded to the notices. Twenty have returned to service, while one is completing a postgraduate course and will rejoin afterwards. The DME has decided to provide another chance for the remaining 94 doctors, some of whom have been absent since 2013, to explain their prolonged leave.
Six doctors were found to have never joined their positions after being appointed. The DME has instructed the heads of institutions to communicate termination orders to those who do not provide satisfactory explanations for their absences.
