Teen's Headaches Vanish After Year-Long Battle
11 Apr
Summary
- Teen suffered daily severe headaches for over a year.
- Persistent post-traumatic headache diagnosis was key.
- Specialized IV treatments finally brought pain relief.
A year-long struggle with severe daily headaches finally concluded for a 14-year-old boy, over a year after a football practice incident in August 2024. Initially experiencing mild pain that he initially overlooked, the headaches escalated to an eight or nine out of ten intensity, forcing him to withdraw from his team. His parents sought extensive medical help, traveling from Kentucky to Georgia, but found no relief for his persistent post-traumatic headache.
Referred to the Cleveland Clinic in January 2025, he was diagnosed by Dr. Konstantinos Tourlas with persistent post-traumatic headache, a condition often lasting over three months after head injuries. Migraine sufferers are more susceptible. Multiple treatments, including nerve blocks and various oral medications, were attempted. A breakthrough came with a five-day IV treatment regimen in September 2025, which reduced his baseline pain from a nine to a five out of ten.
Further oral medication adjustments proved successful, and by September 22, 2025, the teen reported being pain-free. Now feeling much better, he has resumed activities like lacrosse and is considering returning to football, though his parents remain cautious. He is also pursuing academic interests, aiming for the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
