An 18-year-old, Gaurav Pareek, has received a significant milestone surgery at KEM Hospital in Parel, Mumbai. He underwent the implantation of an advanced bone-conduction hearing device in his right ear. This procedure is expected to improve his hearing significantly when activated in three weeks.
Gaurav has a history of enduring 10 operations since he was a month old to correct a series of congenital anomalies. These included hernia repair, cleft lip and palate surgeries, and multiple ear operations leading to hearing loss. His family's plans often revolved around his medical needs, making family holidays impossible.
The sophisticated Osia 3 system implant, valued at over Rs 8 lakh for one ear, was made possible through donations mobilized by KEM Hospital. His previous nine surgeries were performed at a subsidized rate at Wadia Hospital. Doctors noted the implant's benefit for patients with congenital abnormalities affecting Eustachian tubes, as it bypasses damaged outer and middle ear structures.
This surgery was also broadcast live to ENT specialists nationwide as part of a teaching program. Hospital officials expressed satisfaction in providing such cutting-edge technology within the municipal healthcare system, making advanced hearing rehabilitation more accessible.
