Teen's Death Exposes Mental Health System Failures

A recent inquest has revealed that critical issues within the mental health system contributed to the death of 16-year-old Ellame Ford-Dunn in March 2022. Ellame had a history of self-harm and was placed on Worthing hospital's Bluefin ward, an acute children's unit not specialized for mental health care, due to a lack of appropriate beds.

The jury concluded that placing Ellame in this ward was inappropriate and a factor in her death. They also cited the inadequate provision of mental health beds as a contributing cause. The coroner plans to issue a report warning of further child deaths if this provision gap is not addressed.

Further findings indicated poor coordination and communication between multiple agencies involved in Ellame's care. Inconsistencies in nursing handovers and inadequate guidance for staff were also identified as significant issues. Ellame was not immediately followed when she absconded, and it took 59 minutes for police to find her.

Ellame's parents have urged the government to increase funding for mental health services to prevent similar tragedies. Campaigners and her family describe the system as "crumbling at the seams," emphasizing the need for effective specialist provision for young people requiring mental health support.
