Ellen May Hardwick, an 18-year-old with epilepsy, unexpectedly died from cardiac arrest on December 29, 2025, during a seizure. Diagnosed at age five, Ellen had a history of recognizing seizure warning signs, allowing her to ensure her safety. She had been seizure-free for a year and was anticipating applying for her driving license.
While speaking on the phone to her boyfriend, Aidan Healy, 19, Ellen experienced a seizure without any prior indication. Her mother heard her fall, and paramedics were called, but sadly, she could not be resuscitated.
This tragic event is known as SUDEP, or sudden unexpected death in epilepsy. Ellen's family, including parents James and Paula, and siblings Connor and Violet, were unaware of this possibility until post-mortem results were received three weeks ago. Her funeral was held on April 23.
Her father, James, is now dedicated to raising awareness about SUDEP and plans to establish a charity in Ellen's name. They have also set up a fundraiser for Essex and Herts Air Ambulance, Epilepsy Society, and SUDEP Action.
