Teen Survives Rare Double Heart Defect Surgery

Doctors at MGM Healthcare in Chennai have performed a complex open-heart operation on a 14-year-old girl facing two rare and challenging cardiac conditions. The teen suffered from severe mitral regurgitation, where a heart valve failed to close properly, causing blood to leak backward. This significantly strained her heart, leading to breathlessness and immobility.

Adding to the complexity, she had an obstruction in the left ventricular outflow tract (LVOTO), hindering blood flow to the body. Compounding these issues, her heart was positioned centrally in the chest, a condition known as mesocardia. Furthermore, she was diagnosed with Morquio syndrome, an inherited disorder that can affect bones and organs and complicate anesthesia.

The surgical team navigated these challenges by accessing the heart through a carefully planned route. They successfully repaired the damaged mitral valve with a mechanical implant and removed the obstructive tissue from the outflow tract. The patient is now recovering well and is expected to make a full recovery within three to six months, requiring ongoing monitoring.
