A 19-year-old student in Noida made a profound sacrifice, postponing his Class 12 CBSE board examinations and NEET to donate a portion of his liver to his 62-year-old grandmother, Sunita Devi. Her condition had become critical due to advanced liver cirrhosis, and a transplant was deemed the only definitive treatment.
Despite other family members being medically compatible, their existing health issues prevented them from donating. The teenager, whose name is Aditya Raj, volunteered, understanding the urgency of the March 12th surgery, which conflicted with his exams scheduled from February 17th to March 27th. This decision underscores his dedication to family, as he plans to retake his exams and NEET next year.
The complex procedure, involving a 710-gram right lobe graft, lasted nearly 10 hours. Doctors at Max Hospital in Vaishali confirmed the success of the living donor liver transplantation, a delicate surgery where the liver regenerates in both donor and recipient. The grandmother recovered well and was discharged 14 days post-surgery, while Aditya has also resumed his normal activities.
