On June 2, 2026, what would have been Emily Matejovitz's high school graduation day became a poignant tribute to her legacy of life-saving organ donation. Emily, who passed away at age 16 in December 2024, had registered as an organ donor.
Her decision allowed her to save the lives of three individuals, who gathered with her grieving family in Muskegon, Michigan. Among them was Landon Coleman, 16, who received Emily's heart and expressed gratitude for the second chance at life. Ripley Ferrell, 4, received one of Emily's kidneys.
A 54-year-old man who received Emily's liver and another kidney also attended. Emily's mother, Rebecca, found comfort in knowing her daughter's wish to help others was fulfilled, stating the recipients' presence warmed her heart.
The gathering also underscored the critical need for organ donors, with over 100,000 people nationwide awaiting transplants. The Emily Matejovitz Foundation, established by Ripley's family, now provides scholarships and mental health support in her honor.
