Teen Liver Donor Saves Father in Delhi Court Ruling
1 Jul
Summary
- Delhi High Court permits a 17-year-old to donate liver to his father.
- Father suffers from chronic liver disease requiring a transplant.
- Son is the only suitable donor found after extensive evaluation.

The Delhi High Court has authorized a 17-year-old boy to donate a portion of his liver, enabling a critical transplant for his father who is suffering from chronic liver disease. The father, undergoing treatment in the national capital, has cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma, making a liver transplant the sole life-saving option.
Justice Mini Pushkarna's order on June 29 acknowledged the stringent requirements for organ donation by minors. The court was informed that the Lieutenant Governor and the competent authority had approved the donation, as the boy, born in September 2008, was approximately 17 years and six months old and medically fit.
The court noted that Pratik Shaw, the son, was the only medically suitable donor from his near relatives. He voluntarily expressed his willingness to donate, with no coercion or commercial motive evident. The court emphasized that denying permission could lead to the father's loss of life, thus ruling in favor of the donation.
