An 18-year-old tragically passed away on Tuesday from neurological injuries sustained in a road accident. Her family made the selfless decision to donate her organs and tissues, providing a new lease on life for four individuals.
The retrieved organs included both kidneys, the pancreas, and corneas. One kidney and the pancreas were transplanted simultaneously into a 31-year-old male recipient. This complex procedure, involving multiple teams, lasted nearly 18 hours and was a last resort for the patient who had exhausted dialysis options.
The second kidney was transplanted into a 15-year-old recipient at PGIMER. Additionally, the corneas were successfully retrieved, offering the gift of sight to two other individuals. Medical professionals highlighted the crucial role of timely preparation and multidisciplinary management in these successful transplantations.
