Summary
- Teenager died from a rare contraceptive pill complication.
- Her family questioned why she was prescribed the pill.
- The pill was considered a contributing factor in her death.

A 19-year-old named Áine Rose Hurst died after experiencing severe brain swelling, a rare complication linked to the contraceptive pill she was taking. She had initially complained of a headache following a night out on March 8, 2025, which worsened significantly by the next morning.
An inquest revealed Áine had been on the combined contraceptive pill since 2020. Although her blood pressure was found to be high during a routine check in December 2024, a GP later advised her to resume taking the medication in January 2025, a decision her family deeply questioned due to her medical history.
The coroner determined that the oral contraceptive pill, Femodette, was a direct contributing factor to Áine's death, a recognized but rare complication of appropriately prescribed medication. The family expressed their profound grief, remembering Áine as a vibrant and beloved individual.
