Girl's Yellow Eyes Led to Devastating Diagnosis
25 Feb
Summary
- Masie Almond, 14, fell ill with an unusual yellowing of her eyes and skin.
- Doctors diagnosed acute liver failure, necessitating an urgent transplant.
- Despite efforts, the transplant was not viable, and Masie passed away.

Masie Almond, a vibrant 14-year-old, fell ill with symptoms including sickness and a disturbing yellowing of her eyes and skin. Her parents, Kathryn and Stuart, initially mistook her condition for a common bug. However, the unusual jaundice prompted a trip to the hospital.
At Tameside Hospital, doctors were alarmed by the yellow hue of Masie's eyes and stomach. Investigations revealed she was suffering from acute liver failure. This critical diagnosis triggered an urgent need for a liver transplant.
Masie was transferred to Leeds General Infirmary for specialist care. Despite the best efforts of medical teams, her condition worsened significantly. By the time a donor liver was secured, it was too late for a transplant to be viable.
Doctors informed the family that Masie's body was not responding to treatment. Tragically, after spending her final hours with her parents, Masie died in the early hours of October 2, 2024. An inquest later heard from consultants who expressed their devastation and offered apologies for not providing enough information sooner.
