A tragic incident unfolded in Nashik where a 16-year-old girl passed away shortly after receiving a routine tetanus-diphtheria (Td) vaccine on Wednesday. Shravani Anil Patil received the vaccine around 12:40 PM as part of the National Immunisation Programme.
She reportedly fell ill with dizziness on her way home, subsequently collapsing and hitting her head. Despite being taken to both a private and then a government hospital, she could not be revived. Her family alleges the vaccine caused her death.
Health authorities have initiated an Adverse Event Following Immunisation (AEFI) investigation, involving an expert team. Samples have been sent for forensic and chemical analysis, with the post-mortem report pending. Officials noted that the specific vaccine batch was administered to six other beneficiaries, including a 10-year-old boy, who have shown no adverse effects.
The Td vaccine, manufactured by Biological E Limited, is considered one of the safest in the immunization program, with serious adverse reactions being extremely rare. Police have registered an accidental death report and await the medical investigation's findings before proceeding.
