- The run aims to inspire resilience in students.

Sophie Martin, a London teacher, is preparing to run the London Marathon on Sunday, a mere 10 weeks after undergoing heart surgery. This personal challenge is a profound tribute to her daughter, Olive, who tragically passed away after being diagnosed with hypoplastic left heart syndrome. Olive was born in autumn 2024 and died two days later due to a cardiac arrest.
Martin, who experienced heart arrhythmia during Olive's labor and had corrective surgery, sees running as a vital outlet for processing her grief. She hopes her participation in the marathon will serve as a powerful lesson for her students, illustrating that resilience and even joy can emerge from immense sorrow. This event represents a significant new beginning for Martin, as she aims to discover her own strength and capacity for life.
As the PE lead at St James' Roman Catholic Primary School, Martin is part of Team TCS Teachers. Last year, she also ran the Royal Parks marathon, raising £5,000 for Demelza Hospice, which had supported her family. Martin expressed surprise at being accepted into the marathon so soon after her surgery but is determined to complete it, viewing it as a testament to life's ongoing journey.
