Tea vs Coffee: Bone Health Showdown!
12 Dec
Summary
- Daily tea drinkers showed higher bone mineral density than non-tea drinkers.
- Excessive coffee intake (over five cups daily) linked to reduced bone density.
- Tea benefits were more pronounced for women with obesity and alcohol consumption.

New research indicates that daily tea drinkers might experience better bone health compared to those who consume coffee. Analysis of nearly 10,000 women aged 65 and older over a decade revealed that regular tea drinkers possessed a higher hip bone mineral density.
While moderate coffee consumption showed no negative impact, exceeding five cups daily was associated with a reduction in bone mineral density. This suggests that very high coffee intake could potentially harm bone health, especially for women who also consume alcohol. The study found tea to be particularly beneficial for women with obesity.
Experts emphasize that while these findings are significant, they do not necessitate drastic dietary changes. Enjoying a daily cup of tea could be a simple strategy to support aging bones, alongside established bone health cornerstones like calcium and vitamin D. Conversely, extremely high coffee consumption might be less ideal.
