Target Baby Wipes Recalled Over Infection Risk
7 Jun
Summary
- Target recalls two baby wipe types due to bacterial contamination.
- Contaminated wipes pose serious infection risk, especially to newborns.
- Consumers should stop using recalled wipes and return for a refund.

Target has initiated a voluntary recall of two popular baby wipe products due to potential bacterial contamination. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced the recall, citing concerns that the wipes may harbor bacteria capable of causing severe and potentially life-threatening infections. The affected items include Up and Up Fragrance Free Baby Wipes and Up and Up Fresh Cucumber Scented Baby Wipes.
Concerns were raised after the manufacturer, Sapro Temizlik Urunleri, and Target received numerous consumer complaints. These complaints detailed issues such as product discoloration and adverse reactions like skin and eye irritation, and infections. Subsequent testing by the agency confirmed the presence of Burkholderia cepacia complex and Burkholderia gladioli in product samples.
The bacteria pose a significant risk, particularly to immunocompromised individuals, newborns, and young children. While healthy individuals might experience localized infections, these bacteria can spread to the bloodstream in vulnerable populations, potentially leading to sepsis or pneumonia. The wipes were sold nationwide at Target stores and online at Target.com.
Specific manufacturing and expiration date codes, along with Universal Product Codes (UPCs), are detailed for consumers to identify the recalled batches. Target advises anyone possessing the recalled wipes to discontinue their use and return the products to any Target store for a complete refund. Customer service is available via phone for further inquiries.
