8 Sep
Summary
- Tamil Nadu to launch mission to reduce public salt consumption.
- Nearly 50% of medically certified deaths are from cardiovascular diseases.
- A survey using urine samples will assess salt intake levels statewide.

Tamil Nadu is set to implement a comprehensive statewide mission aimed at significantly reducing the amount of salt consumed daily by its public. This initiative addresses the critical public health challenges posed by non-communicable diseases like hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, stroke, and kidney disorders, which contribute to approximately 50% of medically certified deaths in the state. As a foundational step, a first-of-its-kind Statewide survey utilizing urine samples will be conducted to scientifically assess current salt consumption levels among the population. Alongside this, the government will implement standards to gradually decrease salt usage in state-controlled kitchens, including those serving the Nutritious Meal Programme and ICDS schemes.
Furthermore, the mission includes a pilot project to study the feasibility of introducing low-sodium salt substitutes to the public in selected areas. These substitutes, where sodium is partially replaced with potassium, aim to lower blood pressure without a noticeable change in taste. Public awareness campaigns, integrated with initiatives like 'Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam' and Health and Wellness Centres, will systematically counsel individuals with hypertension and educate the broader public on reducing salt in their daily cooking and diets.
