Tamil Nadu Leads in Organ Transplants, Yet Demand Soars

Tamil Nadu is set to be honored with an award for its exceptional performance in cadaver organ transplantation. The award ceremony is scheduled for August 3, 2026, in New Delhi. The state plans to dedicate this recognition to all organ donors and their families. Health Minister K.G. Arunraj emphasized the need for greater public awareness regarding cadaver organ transplantation, addressing lingering misconceptions about body disfigurement after donation.

Despite Tamil Nadu's leading position in transplantation programs, a substantial demand for organs remains unmet. The state currently fulfills merely 7% of the total demand for kidney transplants. Similarly, the success rate for liver, heart, and lung transplants is less than 2%. To combat road traffic accident fatalities, especially among the youth, the state is developing a scheme to offer first aid and CPR training in identified accident-prone areas. A 'deceased organ donor wall of honour' was also inaugurated at a local hospital.
