28 Nov
Summary
- Nearly 600 outpatients daily at the busiest government cardiac care center.
- Over 31,000 interventional procedures performed in a decade.
- Young women lead in ASD device closure, avoiding open-heart surgery.

The Department of Cardiology at TNGMSSH, Omandurar Government Estate, serves nearly 600 outpatients daily, establishing itself as a prominent government cardiac care facility. Over the last ten years, its cardiac cath lab has successfully executed 31,157 interventional procedures, encompassing a wide range of treatments for various heart conditions.
The department excels in performing atrial septal defect (ASD) device closures, with young women constituting a significant majority of the 340 patients treated. This percutaneous approach offers a scar-free alternative to open-heart surgery for this congenital defect.
Recent research from the cardiology team, published in the European Heart Journal, highlights increasing trends in myocardial infarctions among younger populations, particularly post-COVID-19. Experts advise regular screenings and lifestyle modifications to prevent heart attacks, which are on the rise.
