Government Stanley Medical College Hospital (SMCH) in Tamil Nadu has showcased advanced vascular surgical capabilities by successfully treating two patients with complex aortic conditions. A 34-year-old farmer, Parthiban, was admitted with a large, life-threatening abdominal aortic aneurysm that was compressing his lung. Surgeons performed a two-stage hybrid repair, rerouting blood flow and then placing a stent graft to prevent rupture.
In a subsequent case, 45-year-old Kuppammal underwent an emergency procedure for a leaking thoracic aortic aneurysm. This involved placing a stent graft through small incisions to stop the internal bleeding. Both patients received highly specialized care that would typically cost between ₹20 lakhs and ₹30 lakhs in private facilities.
These complex surgeries were fully covered under the Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme. Doctors emphasized the availability of advanced vascular care in government hospitals and noted the significant cost savings for patients. The hospital team's expertise ensured prompt procurement of essential, high-cost materials like the ₹8 lakh stent used for Parthiban's treatment.
