Tamil Nadu Dog Bites: 5.25 Lakh Cases, 28 Rabies Deaths

This year, Tamil Nadu has witnessed a staggering 5.25 lakh dog bite incidents, with 28 confirmed deaths attributed to rabies. Public health officials emphasize that while rabies is nearly always fatal after symptom onset, human deaths are preventable. The primary source of human rabies in India remains dog bites, highlighting the critical responsibility of pet owners in safeguarding their families and communities.

Preventative measures are crucial, starting with regular pet vaccinations and boosters. Large-scale community dog vaccination drives aim to achieve herd immunity, protecting approximately 70% of the canine population. Responsible pet ownership also involves keeping pets supervised, minimizing contact with wildlife, and ensuring pets are microchipped for identification.

Educating family members on safe animal interaction is paramount. If a bite or scratch occurs, immediate and thorough washing of the wound with soap and water for at least 15 minutes is essential, followed by prompt medical attention. Regular veterinary check-ups for behavioural changes in pets can also help identify potential health issues early.
