Dengue Alert: Tamil Nadu Faces Entomologist Crisis
2 Sep
Summary
- Over 40 crucial District Entomologist posts vacant in Tamil Nadu.
- Shortage impacts scientific dengue control planning and monitoring.
- Recruitment delays and court cases prolong unfilled positions.

More than 40 of Tamil Nadu's 45 Health Unit Districts (HUDs) are functioning without a District Entomologist, a critical role in controlling vector-borne diseases like dengue. This significant vacancy means over 40 of the 60 sanctioned Senior Entomologist posts are unfilled statewide. Without adequate entomological surveillance, which assesses mosquito density and breeding patterns, vector control efforts risk becoming activity-driven rather than evidence-driven, according to public health officials.
The Tamil Nadu Public Health Entomologists Association has repeatedly urged the government and the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC) to expedite filling these positions. Recruitment for 33 Senior Entomologist vacancies faced delays after a written exam and interviews in 2025-2026. The final selection list has not been released due to court cases filed by some candidates over recruitment grievances.
The shortage is particularly concerning ahead of the Northeast monsoon, a period when dengue and other vector-borne diseases typically increase. Climate change further exacerbates the spread of such diseases. The association has called for the urgent resolution of court cases and the release of results to fill the vacancies, emphasizing the need for strengthened disease surveillance and control measures.
