Chennai Escalator Chaos: Patients, Elderly Battle Tambaram Stairs
24 Jan
Summary
- Thousands struggle daily to cross busy GST Road at Tambaram.
- Dysfunctional escalators and delayed lift installations cause hardship.
- New escalators promised by February 15 to resolve the issue.

Thousands of commuters in Tambaram, Chennai, are experiencing extreme difficulty crossing GST Road because of non-operational escalators and a year-long delay in lift installations. The foot overbridge, a critical link to bus termini, hospitals, and the court, is used by approximately 10,000 people daily, many of whom are seniors or patients.
Escalators installed four years ago across Tambaram and nearby areas have repeatedly broken down. In Tambaram, officials dismantled the escalators four months ago without providing alternatives. Residents have expressed frustration over the frequent breakdowns and slow repair times for existing escalators in areas like Chromepet.
In response, the divisional engineer stated that five new pairs of escalators have been ordered for Tambaram Sanatorium, Chromepet, and Taramani Link Road, with installation expected to be complete by February 15, 2026. This addresses the ongoing commuter challenges.
