Tamales Recalled: Listeria Risk Found
9 Jan
Summary
- Tamales recalled due to potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination.
- Recalled products were sold in California and Nevada.
- Recall affects tamales with date codes from Oct. 22, 2024, to Oct. 22, 2025.
Primavera Nueva Inc. is voluntarily recalling select lots of its 4-count tamales, announced on January 9, 2026. The recall stems from concerns about potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria capable of causing severe illness, particularly in vulnerable populations. These tamales were distributed for sale across California and Nevada.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) identified the issue during an inspection on October 10, 2025. Production records indicated that the tamales may not have consistently reached temperatures adequate for killing harmful bacteria. This concern specifically relates to a frozen ingredient labeled "Not Ready to Eat. Must Be Thoroughly Cooked Before Eating."
As of January 9, 2026, no illnesses linked to these tamales have been reported. Primavera Nueva Inc. states that corrective actions were implemented on October 11, 2025, to improve temperature monitoring. The FDA advises consumers to discard tamales with date codes from October 22, 2024, through October 22, 2025.
