Super Flu Surges: Hospitalizations Skyrocket

This year's flu season is marked by a dramatic rise in hospitalizations, primarily driven by a novel 'super flu' strain. Data shows a 53 percent increase in weekly hospitalizations, with cumulative hospitalizations up 37 percent for the season. This surge disproportionately impacts individuals over 50, whose hospitalizations have increased by 157 percent since October.

Young children, though experiencing a decline in doctor visits, still represent the largest share of outpatient visits. Tragically, pediatric flu deaths have also increased, with eight reported in the week of January 3 alone, bringing the season's total to 17. This includes a two-year-old from New Jersey who died from flu complications.

The current dominant flu strain is novel to immune systems, rendering many highly vulnerable and increasing the risk of severe, hospitalizing illness. Experts warn that while symptoms are similar to other strains, this variant can lead to more severe outcomes, particularly in children, with warning signs including prolonged fevers and breathing difficulties.
