Teaspoon Rule: Sunscreen Secret to Beat Heat
27 May
Summary
- Six to eight teaspoons of sunscreen are needed for average body coverage.
- Apply one teaspoon to face and neck, plus one to each limb and torso.
- Reapply sunscreen every two hours, or sooner if swimming or sweating.

As temperatures remain high, health officials are reminding the public about the importance of correct sunscreen application. Experts advise using approximately six to eight teaspoons of sunscreen for full body coverage to protect against sunburn and increased skin cancer risk from UV exposure.
This recommended amount includes one teaspoon for the face and neck, one for each arm and leg, and one for the torso and back. It is essential to reapply sunscreen every two hours, or more often if swimming, sweating, or after towel drying.
Sunscreen should have an SPF of at least 30 and a 4-star UVA rating, with users advised to check expiry dates. However, sunscreen alone is insufficient; wearing protective clothing and seeking shade during peak sun hours are also recommended for comprehensive sun protection.
