A new $30 million Summerside Community Health Centre officially opened its doors on Thursday, bringing numerous health services for Prince County residents together in one location. Construction on the facility began in 2022 and now houses services including mental health and addictions counselling, primary care, and cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation.
Health P.E.I. officials highlighted the benefits of having these diverse services co-located. Director of primary health-care operations Andrea Wile noted that collaboration among staff in one building will significantly improve patient well-being and access to care. Executive director for mental health and addictions Rebecca Jesseman added that the bright, welcoming space is crucial for meeting the growing mental health needs of Summerside.
P.E.I. Health and Wellness Minister Cory Deagle expressed optimism that the centre will not only streamline patient care by breaking down silos but also serve as an attractive recruitment tool for healthcare professionals. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to address provincial health-care challenges and potentially alleviate pressure on emergency rooms.
