The inaugural Walk for Oak will take place in Sudbury on September 12th, initiated by Kristin Pichoskie. Three years ago, Pichoskie experienced the profound loss of her son, Oak, who passed away at just four days old. She founded Oak's Tree of Love to ensure Oak's memory endures and to provide a safe haven for families navigating the grief of losing an infant or child.
Pichoskie is actively campaigning for municipalities to designate October as Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month. This includes initiatives like flag-raisings and illuminating landmarks in blue and pink on October 15th. Notable locations such as Sudbury's water tower, Mississauga's landmarks, the CN Tower, and Niagara Falls are set to participate.
Volunteers like Christina Lajeunesse and Mackenzie Mitchell emphasize the importance of public acknowledgment for such grief. Mitchell, who lost her son Bentley in 2021, found limited support initially. Lajeunesse, Mitchell's mother, contributes by knitting blankets for bereavement boxes, hoping to offer a small measure of peace. Pichoskie's mother, Colleen, creates candles to keep Oak's memory alight.
The Pregnancy and Infant Loss Network (PAIL) reports that one in four pregnancies end in loss. Michelle La Fontaine of PAIL highlights the stigmatized nature of infant loss and advises against minimizing phrases like 'at least.' She encourages supportive outreach without expectations for the bereaved. Pichoskie's advice for those experiencing loss is to seek support, connect with family, and channel grief into positive action.
