CPR Class Turns Real: Instructor Saved by Students
6 May
Summary
- Instructor collapsed during a CPR training demonstration.
- Students immediately applied CPR and used a defibrillator.
- The instructor survived and thanked his attentive students.
An instructor at Fox Valley Technical College, Karl Arps, experienced a real cardiac arrest while demonstrating CPR techniques. Students in the March 25 class immediately recognized the signs of distress and acted decisively. They correctly applied the CPR and defibrillator procedures they were learning.
Six students were involved in the life-saving response. Logan Lehrer, one of the students, recounted how the group worked together, each knowing their role. Their swift actions, combined with the guidance from emergency services dispatcher, were crucial for Arps's survival. Experts note that bystander CPR and defibrillator use significantly increase survival rates for cardiac arrest outside a hospital.
Arps, who has been an instructor for 25 years, was amazed by his students' performance and preparedness. After undergoing triple-bypass surgery, he recovered well and has since returned to the college to personally thank his students. He presented them with life-saving pins to commemorate their heroic actions.
