An 18-year-old university student, Aaron Mills, died on January 3, 2026, from meningitis B, just days after arriving in Liverpool to begin his studies. His parents, Deniz and Anthony, were unaware of the dangers posed by this specific bacterial strain, despite Aaron having received a different meningitis vaccine at age 14.
Aaron had quickly settled into his football science degree, making friends and enjoying his newfound independence. His dream was to become a coach for Liverpool FC. However, he developed mild, cold-like symptoms on December 29, 2025, which rapidly escalated.
By the morning of December 30, 2025, Aaron experienced severe symptoms, including a seizure. Despite immediate medical attention and suspected meningitis, by the time he reached the hospital, most of his brain function was lost. Doctors confirmed the meningitis diagnosis, but ultimately declared him brain dead on January 3, 2026.
Following his death, Aaron's family made the decision to donate his organs. His parents are now advocating for greater awareness and prevention, contacting universities and MPs to share their story and prevent other families from experiencing similar tragedies. They feel let down by the lack of information regarding MenB.
His parents are seeking bereavement counselling, grappling with their grief and anger over the preventable nature of their son's death. They sent him to university to pursue his dreams, only for him to succumb to a rapid infection.
